A record 70 countries entered the tournament, but African nations decided to boycott the event because the champion from their region was forced to play against the Asian champion to secure a place. England beat Germany 42 in extra time thanks to a "ghost goal" by Geoff Hurst, who scored three goals in the final a feat matched only by Kylian Mbappe more than half a century later.
